Railroad Crossing (San Antonio, Texas)
Mostly an urban legend rather than verifiable fact, the story about the Haunted Railroad Crossing by Shane Road, south of San Antonio, is well known in the area – and really creepy!
It’s said that in the 1930s, a school bus stalled on the railroad tracks. Before they could escape, a speeding train smashed into the bus, killing the ten children and the bus driver. Since then, if any car stops on the tracks it is pushed by unseen hands across to the safety of the other side. People claim it’s the spirits of the children who push the cars to prevent a tragedy like their own.
Even today, cars line up at the haunted intersection to see if the legend is true. The driver stops the car near the tracks and puts the car in neutral. And even though it appears that the road is on an upward grade, the car begins to roll. It rolls slowly first, then gains speed, rolling up and over the tracks to the other side.
But that's not all. People who have sprinkled powder over their car's trunk and rear bumper before their car is pushed across the tracks have then discovered tiny fingerprints and handprints in the powder - the prints of the ghost children who push them to safety.

I think there are haunted railroad crossing stories all through the south. There was at least one in Shreveport when I was a kid and another in Marshall and a few others I heard of.
I've heard of this story thanks Mysterious Ways a creepy TV show with Adrian Pasdar. There's also a really good movie inspired by this legend, called Fingerprints (they've added in a homicidal maniac to spice things up, but the ghosts of the kids are the same).

What an interesting legend. Not sure if I'd want to see if it really happens.
One of my favorite American urban myths! Though I have never read if anyone has checked the records if it ever happened..? Even in the 30's a school bus massacre would be recorded somewhere.

I don't find this one creepy at all--ghost children trying to protect people. Kinda sweet---okay, in a creepy way.

I just got goose bumps! Seems like there are (or were) lots of school buses hit by trains. Another reason why I drive my kids to school:)
I've always been fascinated with hauntings of little children. You can't help but to be curious instead of afraid of sightings or experiences such as these. The finger prints would definitely give me goose bumps though!

Still, I'd have to say this is a bit more positive view for ghosts, as opposed to the vindictive, murderous type.

Huh. I don't know how I feel about this one. On the one hand it's sad, but on the other it's kinda cool. In a creepy dead children kind of way. hmmm.

Oh wow, that's a great story! Not actually scary, for a change :)
Spooky! There is a road in the Uk where this happens - it's a trick of the landscape, it looks like the road is going uphill, but really, it is going downhill. It's famous. I suspect that something of this sort if going on here.

I'm from Texas (Austin) and grew up with this legend. For more such tales, Ghost Stories of Old Texas was a favorite of mine as a kid.
