Hauntings: Highgate Cemetery

Highgate Cemetery (UK)

Opened in 1839, Highgate Cemetery is in North London and has 170,000 people buried in it.  Naturally, the site of so many dead bodies has spawned tales of many supernatural incidents and ghosts over the years. Here are some of them:

~ The Highgate Vampire is described as a 7-foot-tall, dark male figure, dressed in a long black coat and top hat
, with glowing, hypnotic eyes.  He appears and disappears at whim, and there have been dozens of sightings since the late 1960s, although no one's reported him sucking their blood.

~ A man whose car broke down outside the cemetery’s gates came face to face with the Ghoul.  The creature’s red eyes glared at him through the graveyard's iron gates until he ran away.

~ The floating ghost of a Nun has been reported passing over the graves.

~ The specter of the Old Woman races between the gravestones, her long hair whipping in the wind.  It’s said she murdered her children and dashes about, desperately searching for them.

~ One night, a local businessman was horrified when a phantom jumped over the fence and landed right in front of him.  He described it as having glowing eyes, pointed ears, and large nose.  This might have been the infamous Spring-Heeled Jack.  The first claimed sighting of Spring-heeled Jack was in 1837.  Later sightings were reported all over Great Britain, including at Highgate Cemetery.  He was known to have a frightening countenance and make inhuman leaps, which inspired his nickname.

They have the best "ghosts" in England!

Considering I'm a big fan of ghosts and I live in the South East of England, I've never been to Highgate Cemetery! That would be a really scary place to spend the night!

Funnily enough, I recently read about the Spring-Heeled Jack on another person's blog! The other entities you highlighted are new to me, though. So eerie!

I lived in London for a year but I can't remember if I ever went to HC. It's on my list for my next visit now!

Yikes. These are some of the most frightening ghosts that I have read about in a while. Red eyes. Yellow eyes. Spring-heeled Jack. I like to think I would remain composed if faced with a ghost. But, I am not sure about these...

I have never heard of it before. But It really sounds a bit scary .

For some weird reason I look at real estate in London a lot (you never know when the lottery win is gonna happen!) and not long ago they had a flat that overlooked Highgate. It was almost all glass and I can't for the life of me understand why someone would build/want to live in a glass house overlooking a haunted cemetery!

Cemeteries have always intrigued me. My great-grandmother lived right next to one and when we were growing up, my sister and I would play literally next to the stones. To any normal person, this might sound creepy, but for some reason it never bothered us. We liked it.
With that being said, however, if I were to see the phantom, nun and vampire mentioned above at Highgate, I'd be the first one screaming for the nearest person. Now that I'm older, I'm more easily frightened then I was when I was little. Unless the apparitions are friendly of children, of course. I feel like my father and my best friend "visit" me from time to time and I'm hoping I will never grow fearful of their lingering.

Remind me never to go visit there at night.

Wow! That is a lot of bodies! No wonder there are so many stories and sighting! :) I am not sure which of the ghosts from this post would scare me the most- but I am thinking the "Old Woman" would freak me out!

I'll bet they do a midnight ghost walk kind of tour at this cemetery. I'll have to investigate. Face to face with a ghoul? Shudder.

I might be (am) crazy, but I would love to live next to a cemetery--especially an ancient and beautiful one. You always hear stories about scary things around them, but I find them one of the most peaceful places on earth.

Old cemeteries fascinate me. I have a book about ghosts in Charleston, SC, cemeteries, and saw some of them, (the cemeteries not the ghosts) when we visited there. This one looks very spooky, as do the ghosts.

I love this topic! And I love ghost stories surrounding places like this. Yes, a ghost walk here would be amazing!

It would be interesting to see a cemetery that is that old. The oldest headstone I saw was in the late 1880's.

Ah well, if no one has reported their blood being sucked I don't believe it. Liars. All of them lol

I love the picture on here... it can be an inspiration for a story! :D I think cemeteries are peaceful, but if I saw the Highgate Vampire, I might change my opinion! ~Jax
