Hauntings: Bachelors Grove Cemetery

Bachelors Grove Cemetery (Illinois)

The cemetery lies on the outskirts of Chicago.  The first people buried there were German immigrants who died while working on the Illinois-Michigan Canal in the 1830s.  The cemetery was used until it was closed in the 1960s.  Despite being fenced shut and the road leading to it blocked, people continued to go there and more than 100 paranormal sightings reported.

The supernatural events reported at the cemetery include:

The White Lady
(or The Madonna of Bachelors Grove):
A lady dressed in white has been seen walking the grounds during the full moon. The woman is rumored to be buried in the cemetery beside her young son and can sometimes be seen holding a baby in her arms.
The Phantom Farmhouse:
On the path leading to the cemetery, a picturesque white farmhouse appears, but when visitors walk closer, it disappears. Although no farmhouse ever existed in the vicinity, many people have reported seeing it.
The Farmer and his Horse:
It’s said that in the 1870s, a farmer was plowing a nearby field when something startled his horse. The horse bolted and when the farmer tried to stop it, he became tangled in the reins. When the horse cut across the edge of a pond at the back of the cemetery, it fell in. Neither farmer nor horse could escape the weight of the plow and drowned. Almost 100 years later, two forest rangers reported seeing the apparitions of farmer and horse emerge from the water, cross a road, and head to nearby farmland.
Religious monks:
As recently as 1984, witnesses reported seeing multiple figures dressed in monks’ robes walking  throughout the cemetery
Lights and Orbs:
Common sightings include blue colored lights and orbs that fly about the cemetery. Others report a brilliant red light flying rapidly up and down the trail to the cemetery. The light is so bright and moves so fast it’s impossible to tell what it is. Witnesses state it leaves a red, comet-like streak in its wake.
Ghost Cars:
Drivers passing through the area on the Midlothian Turnpike will come up to a sharp curve in the road and then collide with what seems to be a vintage 1940s gangster car. After the first shock has past, they find no damage—and no other car. Also, people traveling west on the turnpike report seeing taillights in front of them. The brake lights go on, and the car turns off the road. But once they get to the point the car turned, they find no car and no road, only the woods around the cemetery. Other drivers report passing phantoms autos, only to see the car vanish in their rearview mirrors.
The Woman sitting on the Grave:
A photograph, which ran in the reputable Chicago Sun-Times, purportedly showed the image of a ghostly, transparent woman sitting on a tombstone that was not seen by anyone when the photo was originally taken.

The Black Dog:
Witnesses report seeing a black dog that vanishes when they approach it.

When so many supernatural things happen in the one place, you have to wonder if maybe there is something weird about the energy in that spot....

Interesting stuff! Have you ever seen anything like this?

I've always been mesmerized by graveyards. My great grandmother lived right next to one so whenever we played in the backyard of her row home in Philadelphia, we'd literally be running around graveyards. Creepy now that I think back on it.
She would tell us about a lady in white who roamed around her old house when she first married my great grandfather. It was said that the woman had been murdered by her husband and he cut her head off. My great grandmother told us the woman would often scurry around the house when the sun would fall when she was sitting on her rocking chair on the porch. She even told us she was face to face with her one evening when her wedding ring got stuck to the pin of the laundry line hanging in the yard. I would have fainted!
I can't imagine seeing a car and then it vanishing off the road. Or even mysterious headlights. Now that is just eerie! Reminds me of that old horror movie Christine.

Creepy stuff! There's always something particularly creepy about a white-clothed person in a cemetery. Thanks for this spooky post!

Those lights fascinate me. Do u think the ghosts ordered them from Amazon? It is nice to think that you can still party after you are dead.

That's a lot of spooky events for one cemetery. Hey, if you're going to hit a car, make it a ghost car.

messymimi said...

Lots of odd things. It also makes me wonder how the descendants of those buried there feel about being denied access to their ancestors graves, but i'm weird and think of stuff like that.

Have you notice female ghosts are always wearing black or white. Never pink or orange, or plaid or I-dunno, nothing? :) Love the creepy post Lexa. I so want to visit this place, but from a safe distance at night. Using a telescope or something. :P

Supernatural figures in monk's robes? They must have come directly from The Strangers Outside.
Creepy post. Now I want to visit that cemetery.

Bish Denham said...

Wow... Maybe the farm house that disappears is related to the farmer who drowned.

I don't necessarily love ghost stories, but I LOVE old cemeteries! Does that make me strange??

Honestly the monks would scare the hell out of me. Love the phantom farmhouse, how cool.

On the one hand, I would love to visit this place. On the other, I am afraid I would pee my pants... even though I don't believe ghosts can hurt us... it would be freaky. I can't imagine colliding with a ghost car. Yikes.

Ooooh! I'm not sure which one I find more fascinating...maybe the ghost car.

How freakin' fascinating! I'm such a chicken though so I'm not sure I'd make a trip there...but the ghost cars sure have my attention lol

These things sound interesting on paper but I wouldn't want to experience them for real. Too spooky by half.

The vanishing house is my favorite part. I'm reminded why I would love to live next to a cemetery. Is that morbid? I think it would be really cool.

I recall a few months ago you were freaked out by my website's snaky sound. And you can post about this graveyard without getting the chills? No way does that compute.

I can't enter to win your book because I bought it. I think I'm on Chapter 8. It's just after all those body parts start plopping on Ramsey's head. Would you please send me some bright night lights? And stop complaining about my snakes, okay?

Wow! That's a lot of sightings for just one location! Great post! Thanks for sharing!

Strange but true... the question is, how can so many things happen in one spot...?
And I thought graveyards are supposed to be "safe" places... *shudders*

Why do ghost ladies are always in white?

I'm enjoying your posts as I'm always intrigued by ghosts and hauntings...shiver...

This sounds familiar for some reason. Perhaps it's the White Lady or the monks. I've never been there, but maybe it was featured on Unsolved Mysteries or something a few years ago. Very interesting, none-the-less.

The fact that I read this post at 2:53 AM when the whole house is still-quiet made it more scary.

Interesting theme for the challenge.

Wow, that's so creeptastic! I love it. And hauntings, as long as they're not happening to me. Happy A to Z!

Oooh..spooky. I loved it.
Later this month my husband and I are visiting Tasmania (Australia) and the Port Arthur historic site. This was a penal settlement and has a particularly grisly history. We are doing the ghost tour on April 30 so I hope I will an interesting story to tell on May 1.

I'm not going there anytime soon. You know which image would freak me out the most? The woman sitting on a grave. Some of the others feel almost expected. But, a woman on a grave strikes me as more ominous than the others. Maybe just a foreshadowing of my own future. Thanks for the chills. ;)

Oh my gosh, I'm not sure about visiting this cemetery. Too many things that would have me spooked, though I do like walking around cemeteries.

The lady in a white flowing gown seems common in the paranormal. There is a temple in Belize, Xunantunich, that a lady in white ("Stone Woman) haunts too.

Jak said...

Geez, so many different style hauntings for one place. The farmhouse one seems so odd to me. I think that is the first instance I've heard about where an entire house is an apparition. Even odder is the fact there is no documented proof of one ever existing there. Crazy.

You think those ghost hunter shows would be all over this place!

Ive actually been to this one I think. When we lived in chicago... it was the story of the lady in white and the black dog that attracted us there. We didnt see anything... Im okay with that.
