Celebrate: Classic TV & Giveaways

We've lost a number of celebrities over the past year. They will all be missed, but I have a special place in my heart for Mary Tyler Moore. Her show was on in the 70s, when I was a tween, and "Mary Richards" was one of the very few role models for girls/women that showcased a working woman, dedicated to her job, fighting her way up in a challenging field (TV producer), whose life didn't revolve around a husband or boyfriend, and who was a truly good, moral, and ethical human being.

I also loved her show because our family made a point of sitting down to watch it together over a plate of brownies we always made just for the occasion. It was a good time, an innocent time, so unlike the world today.

Here are 5 of my favorite TV shows when I was a kid---the ones that really touched my heart and left a lasting impression:

The Dick Van Dyke Show

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

The Bob Newhart Show

The Carol Burnett Show

M*A*S*H

Which were your favorite TV shows as a child/teen?

RIP Mary Tyler Moore. I watched her show occasionally. I watched Carol Burnett ALL the time. She was one of my faves. MASH was a good show too. Also loved Star Trek and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (not too many people remember that one). I could go on but I won't. Hope you have a great weekend. Hugs. Eva

There are certain TV programmes that make you feel nostalgic for the post. I was a huge Starsky and Hutch fan . . . probably not quite the same but reminds me of growing up. Enjoy your weekend, Lexa.

I've heard of a couple of those shows but have never seen any of them. Possibly I'm a little too young...Have a great weekend!

Watched all of those shows. M*A*S*H was my favorite. And the ending of the second Bob Newhart Show was the best ever,

The Dick Van Dyke Show was a little before my time, and I never seemed to catch up with it on the stations that always showed old reruns, but I watched all the others--great TV shows, all of them.

Heard a piece on Moore yesterday afternoon, they said the network wouldn't let her character on MTM be married because then the viewers would deduce somehow that Rob and Laura (of Dick Van Dyke) had gotten divorced! Go figure. Have a great weekend!

All of our favorite stars are leaving us lately. So sad. Loved all the shows that you mentioned Lexa. Was a big fan.

Oh I love all these shows and watched them all the time. In fact, I still watch MASH every day since it is on the history channel. I loved the Carol Burnett show and remember watching that show with that certain dress...I laughed so hard. Mary Tyler Moore was so great for the time because it showed an independent woman and it was funny...love the Chuckles episode and the episode where Johnny Carson comes to visit. dick Van Dyke was funny as well and she could always say "Oh Rob" in a perfect way. I have to add Gilligan's Island and Lost In Space because when I got home from school, I ran to the T.V. And watched these 2 all the time. I also love Bewitched, Barney Miller and the Bob Hope Specials.

Saturday night, back then, was the best night on TV. How I loved the line line-up with MTM followed by Bob Newhart. You knew you were seeing something smart and funny. We sure to use some of that today.

Love those old shows, too. In fact, I still watch some of them on the ReRun channel.

Those are some of my favorite shows from back then too. Sounds like we could have been TV friends back then. Have a great weekend!

Dick Van Dyke was already over when I was a kid, but I loved all the rest of these shows. It's really amazing what an impact the Mary Tyler Moore show had. My family watched these shows together too. :)

Mary Tyler Moore was awesome. I was sad to hear of her passing. I also really liked MASH. One of the things I remember as a kid was watching Wild Kingdom and the Wonderful World of Disney.

Tamara Narayan said...

I remember watching The Carol Burnett Show with my parents, but when it comes to favorites, I might pick things (to my current shame) like The Incredible Hulk, Dukes of Hazzard, Mork and Mindy, The Love Boat, and Fantasy Island. Beyond those, I really loved In Search Of...

Mary Tyler Moore will be missed. She was a legend.

I also enjoyed what I've seen of The Carol Burnett Show (it was one of my mom's favorites), and MASH as a kid. The various Star Trek series was central to my childhood, as was Doctor Who and Red Dwarf.

Beverly Stowe McClure said...

These shows you mentioned bring back memories. I loved them all. Today, I watch little TV. It's just not the same. Mary Tyler Moore was the best. She will be missed.

Kate Larkindale said...

I love MASH too. We've been re-watching it with the kids and even after all these years, it's still great.

Unknown said...

I watched a little MASH... but I was more a cartoon style kid/teen. Thank you for the warm welcome to the celebrate hope!
Have a great weekend!

Andrew Leon said...

Well, I wanted to respond to this, but I never had time to sit down and do it and, now, I have to walk out the door. Maybe I can get back to it this weekend.

Elizabeth Seckman said...

I watched MASH. That was back in the days when a family only had one TV and we mostly watched what my dad and brother's liked. My mom was a reader and never cared much for TV and I was the baby of the family and had little voting power. LOL

L. Diane Wolfe said...

I loved the Mary Tyler Moore show. Ted was such a hoot.

I live in the boonies, and we didn't have much TV reception out there.

I was born in the early 80s so I never got a chance to see any of those shows. Thanks for making me feel young. ;)

stephen Hayes said...

I watched all of your favorite shows. My favorite was probably Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color on Sunday nights, which got even better after my parents bought a color TV.

messymimi said...

These were some of the best ever. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I was shocked and sad when I heard that Mary Tyler Moore had passed. I don't hear a lot about these stars from my younger years until they die. The shows that we found so much a part of our lives become "classics" and the younger generations find their comfort in newer series. Life does go on.

Cathy Keaton said...

Sad to hear about Mary Tyler Moore. I remember her a bit, but not as much as Carol Burnett. I watched her show a little more. I watched MASH with my parents, too, even though I didn't understand anything going on. I grew up in the 80's, so my favorite shows were Family Ties and Cheers--shows like that. Good times missed, indeed.

Sue Bursztynski said...

I remember the Carol Burnett Show, which I loved at the time, and yes, the Dick Van Dyke Show, with MTM as his wife. I didn't discover the MTM Show till a few years ago. The Odd Couple STILL makes me laugh; I think those two were the definitive Felix and Oscar. Star Trek and Dr Who were my childhood favourites and I still watch both on DVD. I watched Lost In Space, though when I discovered Star Trek I gave a sigh of relief at finding something more adult than LIS. Only in recent years have I come to quite like LIS, for its sheer over-the-top qualities, its unexpected guest stars such as Michael Rennie and Michael Ansara and Stanley Adams, who would appear in Star Trek. And the music was composed by a certain "Johnny" Williams... Yes, THAT John Williams! And who could have predicted that the kid who played Will Robinson, the Wesley Crusher of his time, would eventually play such a well-loved character in Babylon 5?

MASH is the only one of those shows I'm familiar with. Not sure whether we didn't have the others over here, or if I just didn't see them.

I think the casting directors must have been of a stellar group because each of the characters were perfect in their roles. Mary was a dear and I feel as if I"ve lost a friend. I spent a lot of time with her and her situations during The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Thanks, Lexa, for including Dragon in your Freebie lineup! Really appreciate it.

Cathy Kennedy said...

Lexa, I watched all of the same programs as a kid with the exception of MASH. I didn't pick up on that one until adulthood many years after the kids came along. The Carol Burnett Show is probably the most fun, memorable series from my youth. It always left me in stitches! It's sad to hear about the celebrities passing. It just reminds me that I'm getting older, too. Thanks for hosting the Friday fun and for visiting. Have a good weekend and a new upcoming week, my friend!

I remember watching Mash. Thanks for the flashback!

Really great post, RIP Mary Tyler Moore. Also, great Foxy suggestions, thank you for sharing. :)

Not familiar with any of the shows, as they weren't a part of my childhood: off to check all the books you've linked to :)

Tonja Drecker said...

Lovely post! She was a wonderful actress, and I always enjoyed watching her shows too. Thanks for taking us back :)

dolorah said...

Those are all possibly my top five fav shows too.

Unknown said...

I didn't watch a lot of MTM, only knew her as an icon. But when Philip Seymour Hoffman died, it hit me hard. Some actors/celebrities enter your life in a way that makes their passing difficult on a deep, emotional level.

Ruth Schiffmann said...

MASH was the only one of these that I didn't watch. I also remember watching That Girl with Marlo Thomas, and CHiPs - although maybe that was later. It's always fun to catch any of these on the retro channel =)

Bonnee Crawford said...

I've seen a bit of M.A.S.H but not heard of the others, I guess I'd better look into them. I was a bit of a fan of Sabrina the Teenage Witch :3

Sheena-kay Graham said...

That's a nice top 5 list there. RIP Mary.

Heather R. Holden said...

Many great classics here! I've had so many favorite shows growing up that I think I'd have a hard time narrowing 'em down to just five, LOL.

Jenny Baranick said...

I never watched her show, but I heard it was wonderful.

(I wrote this once and computer crash while sending so if there'er two, sorry)

M.A.S.H was my favourite of those and I used to love TizWas, Harold Lloyd, and Monkey Magic. Cartoons were Road Runner and most of Disney. :)

those were all my favourites, too. There were a number of good shows while my kids were growing up, too. Waltons, Hart to Hart, Star Trek, Macgyver, Moonlighting, Hillstreet Blues.

I loved (and still love) MASH. I have watched the series over and over again throughout my life. I also was a big fan of Bewitched and I Dream of Jeanie growing up. I also enjoyed many others- but those were some of my favorites. Thanks for sharing yours. :)

I can still hear the theme song for Mash. My parents used to watch it every night as I was going to bed. My old favorites are Mr. Ed, Get Smart, I Dream of Genie, Bewitched, and Dungeons & Dragons. (There had to be one cartoon in there.) I miss the moral character of older shows.

Annie Neugebauer said...

That's so interesting; I didn't watch a single one of the five you listed! My favorite was probably I Love Lucy. I also liked Bewitched and The Munsters. :)
