IWSG: Writer Quotes

My brain seems to be taking a little vacation after finishing novel revisions, and I can't come up with a topic for the IWSG -- but here are others who have advice:

This is a post for the Insecure Writer's Support Group, the brainchild of Alex J. Cavanaugh. Thanks, Lexa! Love it! Especially the Raymond Chandler one... I remember a Q and A session with Roger Zelazny, in which someone asked him why his hero smoked so much. He explained that before taking up the pipe he smoked a lot of cigarettes. When trying to think what to write next, he would take a puff and then think, "Ah, yes! 'He lit a cigarette.' " He gave some good advice in the blurbs between his short stories - some of it taken from Ernest Hemingway, actually. Stephen King gives some good advice too - I confess I prefer his non fiction to his fiction!

Hello Lexa. I love those quotes. I'm very familiar with the Edgar Rice Burrough's one...maybe eventually the odds will be in my favour, not just in the Hunger Games...:-)

Good quotes! I have the Chekov one as my email signature....

Love the quotes! They say a lot, make snese, and make me nod and smile. Until your brain is back with us, hugs!

Really like the second one - so true!

Let your mind enjoy a bit of a break, and meanwhile, the quotes are inspiring!

Love the quotes. I especially love the second one too. So true.

I love a good quote. Especially Hemingway's. Let them think you were born that way. Haha. Been doing that for awhile.

Loved the quotes, Lexi...from one writer to another. Enjoy your break from creating.

All my first drafts are crap. But I LOVE the heck out of them. Until I start revisions, that is. Then I HATE them! It's a complex range of emotions...

Hi Lexa! I enjoyed the quotes. I'm a huge Stephen King fan and find many of his quotes to be inspirational as well as a bit funny! Also love the one where he says something about: When in doubt, kill your darlings!" lol

LOL the last pic made me laugh. Unfortunately that's something I would do!!

Thanks for sharing these. I can never get enough quotes. And the Chandler one made me chuckle. Something to keep in mind the next time I get stuck on my WIP. :D

If you've just finished novel revisions, then you owe yourself a little break from insecurities. Don't worry, I'm sure they'll all come back by January. :)

Love those Mark Twain quotes. He never fails to amuse me.

Love the quotes and you featured some of my favorite writers: Hemingway, King, Twain, and Gaiman.

I love these quotes, hilarious and so true.

Who hasn't done that last one? Oops. No matter how careful you are, it has to happen at least once.

These are great. Ernest Hemingway's is perfect for the first draft I'm working on. It gives me encouragement that there is hope.

All good quotes, thanks for sharing.

Love those quotes. Raymond Chandler has to be the best, though I have to agree with Ernest that "all first drafts are shit!" These were great for today - or every day.

The first quote might be doable with all the crazy stuff happening around the world. Stay safe!

So Neil Gaiman is my hero. That is all.

Ha! Love the quotes. Actually, the misspelled name one made me think of when I was shopping for editors. When they call me Lori instead of Loni, I know they probably don't have the eye for editing that I'm looking for. :)

Edgar Rice Burroughs was on to something...

Great quotes, Lexa! I agree with Hemingway! The first draft of everything is crappy-crap that crapped crap. It just has to be an ugly duckling before it can become a beautiful swan. There are no "swan" first drafts.

Happy IWSG Day!

Love the quotes! I'm with you on a friend brain. Mine is not from finishing anything. I wish. I really, really wish. NO, my is from too much adulting this week.

Very nice quotes (smile) have a blessed week.

Thanks for the post, Lexa. Mark Twain has it right - fiction has to be credible. I once wrote a story about a true event but it was such an outlandish event, it was deemed unbelievable.

Wonderful writerly quotes. A graphic, quote, or video will do when my brain freezes for IWSG.

I love the second one.

Great quotes! I can relate far too well to the "error" one, much to my inner perfectionist's horror...LOL.

The quotation from Chekhov shows how to write the best sentences.

Thanks for the great quotes! I particularly like the one about life being so much trial and error. It's so true.

Thanks for the quotes, Lexa!
And special thanks to Raymond Chandler. Maybe I'll have a man with a gun burst through the door in my next (problematic) chapter! :D
