On Friday night, Dec 13th, snow fell in Cairo for the first time in 100 years.
Yes, those tiny things that look like ants in the snow are actually people.
Many Egyptians were delighted with the snow because most haven't seen it before.
But it quickly melted, leaving a flood. Egyptian streets have no gutters or sewer system because with only about 5 rainy days a year, those are generally unnecessary.
The snow didn't reach the Red Sea coast where I live because of the relative warmth of the sea. Too bad. I'd have been thrilled. I used to live in the north east of the US, and I kinda miss a white Christmas...

I miss snow too, Lexa. A temperate climate is all well and good, but winter just ain't winter without snow. What's the point of the cold if you don't get the pretty?

I saw pictures of snow on the pyramids and the Sphinx on Facebook this weekend. Absolutely stunning. Sorry you didn't get any in your area. :(

How strange it is to read about a city not having gutters or sewers, and yet if you think about it, completely obvious in the desert :)
I went to University of Arizona, which has a lot of Arab students. One winter we got a rare snowfall and a big crowd of Arab guys were rolling around in the stuff, utterly amazed. It wasn't long before they invented the snowball!

I'm not big on snow. It's fun to play in but I don't like how it makes traveling dangerous. I want to make sure my family can get here for the holidays.
I've been seeing a picture of a "confused" camel sitting on snow these last few days, and wonder if you got any snow around your area. I shall share many pictures of white Christmases (even a few frozen ones) just to make you feel better ;-D
I was wondering what you thought of the snow! I'm sorry you didn't get any, but hopefully that means it didn't flood where you live? I love those pictures!
I guess here in the states for the most part we take snow for granted. I think most of the states get a good snow fall at least once a season. I do feel bad though that the greeks are left with a flood. That cannot be good at all.

Thanks so much for all the well wishes from everyone!--"Sway" was a tough book to write, but I feel like it is definitely a solid piece of literature. It's the kind of book that'll make you want to stop reading even though you know you can't... not after everything you learn about the main character.
We had snow in Kentucky the last week or so... does that count? :-)

Snow has been blowing all over the US in the past two weeks, and I think in Europe also. I would never expect to hear that it snowed in Egypt. i am hoping that the heavy snow of December is not an omen of things to come when winter really starts on Saturday.
Well, I live in Austria and we have always tons of snow in November, January & February. However, for whatever reason it always gets a bit warmer in December, and Christmas mostly ends up as kinda 'spring day' :)

Matthew's book sounds awesome. Wow, it is snowing in the strangest places this year - where is that global warming? The pictures are amazing but as you say, it got pretty uncomfortable afterwards. A pity you didn't get to see it. I am in France, but not snowing here. It snowed lightly when I was in Amsterdam. Head for Spain next so probably won't see any snow this trip! Happy Christmas.

The snow looks beautiful in such a strange place for it! I can imagine how exciting it was for people who had never seen snow before. It is snowing here as I type this, so I am very used to the snow- but that first time thrill of seeing and feeling it must be something. Crazy about the flooding- I had no idea about the lack of sewers. Hopefully the flooding didn't last long!
Sway sounds really interesting. I know I wouldn't want my recurring childhood nightmare to come true! Wishing Matthew the best of luck!

I saw those pictures on the news of the pyramids covered in snow and wondered if you were getting any. They sure were pretty, but I hate hearing it caused such a mess. We hardly ever get snow here in SC, so when we do, drivers go crazy and have wrecks left and right.

I'm sure anyone superstitious in Egypt had a bit of a freak-out at the sight of snow on Friday 13th, but that's so cool. I can't imagine snow in Egypt, so that must have been really exciting for a lot of people. Sway sounds really cool and so do Matthew's other books.
I don't know if it wasn't up the other day- or I just didn't notice it- but I love the festive cover photo! So magical! Right now we have a ton of snow here, but they are predicting rain and temps in the 60's this weekend- so I think it will not be a white Christmas here, either.
