Celebrate: TGIF! & Giveaways

This week I'm celebrating:
1) It's Friday! TGIF! Woohoo!
2) My air-conditioner has been limping along, barely keeping my writing room cool although it's set on its lowest degree. I figured it was leaking Freon (a problem it had after it was first installed).  My husband was just on the point of calling the repairmen when he asked me:

HIM: When was the last time you cleaned the filters?
ME: Uh...filters?
HIM: You know, the ones where you lift the top of the machine and take them out.
ME: Umm, but that machine is really high on the wall. I can't reach it like the window one we have in the living room. And besides this is a split one. Doesn't that mean only the fan portion is here and there are filters on the main part of it on the outside wall of the apartment?
HIM: No, they're on the inside part. Are you telling me you've never cleaned the filters? In the FIVE YEARS we've had it?
ME *sheepishly*: Noooo...

So guess what happened when I finally got on a chair and lifted the cover?  I found the filthiest, most dust-covered filters known to man.

Now, the newly cleaned filters are back in and my room is colder than an igloo. LOL!

Am I the only one who has forgotten to clean the filters in their air-conditioner?

There are filters to clean in the air conditioner??? Well, obviously, I've never cleaned them either... LOL

We rarely need them here unfortunately! But no, didn't know they had filters to clean. Glad you fixed your problem without any costly repair bills though.
Happy Friday, Lexa.

If I had an air conditioner, I would almost certainly never clean the filters. Glad you're getting your cool back on!

Our unit is outside and the only filter we have is at the intake point - and yes, I change it every month.

I worked for a heating and air-conditioning company for many years. Filters should be changed at least twice a year and never-never lower the temperature below 70. You risk it freezing over and this could ruin your a/c unit.

Mine broke down years ago. I live on the top floor and can't do much about checking, though I did check the inside. I have a fan for the living room and another for the bedroom. At bedtime in summer I put a towel on the pillow and soak my hair. It helps!

Glad you're cool again, with no expense! Have a great weekend :-)

Ha, ha. Guess I'd better check my filters. Thanks for the tip.
I love the dog's expression.
Have a super weekend.

Five years worth of dust - yuck!

I'm terrible at that too!

Glad you figured out the air conditioner. We have central air, but the upstairs rooms don't get very cool, especially my older daughter. Sometimes I wonder if I should just get her a window unit. If I do, I'll clean the filters!

No, you aren't the only one to ever forget. Happy Cool Friday!

Thank God my hubby takes care of these things because I would never have known:) I bet your husband rolled his eyes didn't he? Mine does that quite a bit but this is why we have the beautiful ability to ignore:) Have a great weekend!

Air conditioning--- I'm not sure I'm familiar with the concept. I have a fan that I aim at myself when I'm resting. But then kitten Eleanor wants to rub herself against my face so I have to wrap a blanket over my head which renders the fan ineffective. And then the other kittens and cats have to sleep on top of me as well, unless the weather is REALLY hot at which point they try to melt into the floor.

Happy Friday, everyone.

I don't have an air conditioner, so never had to worry about the filters. I know at the cinemas I worked in the guys would come and take them out to clean every 3 months or so. I was kind of blown away to discover my vacuum cleaner has filters I'm supposed to clean! I have no idea where they are, but there's a sticker underneath the vacuum saying to clean them….

stephen Hayes said...

Thanks for reminding me. I'm off to check my filters, which are probably as bad as yours were.

It's my hubby's job to clean the AC filter. Is way up in our ceiling.

The air conditioner has filters. Uh... shoot.

mshatch said...

I don't have air conditioning at my house but I do have a fan for those hot nights in the summer. Luckily, I'm very heat tolerant. Glad you got your AC fixed :)

Cathrina Constantine said...

I'd never clean the filters. Thankfully my husband does remember.

Glad your room is now cool!!!

Glad your AC troubles had an easy fix! Have a good weekend!

Deanie Humphrys-Dunne said...

So happy about your A/C problem! Look what you learned from your husband's suggestion. I probably wouldn't have thought about that either, no worries. Now your room is nice and frosty. :) Definitely something to smile about.

Patricia said...

Yep, the filters gotta be clean to let the cool air through. Learned that the hard and hot way. Enjoy your cool weekend.

Every day is like Friday for me. :( And yes, I've had MANY instances where I've forgotten to clean the filters from my old air conditioners. You're not alone. :) Sadly, I don't have one now; I'm stuck with two ceiling fans and a rotating floor fan. Yuck. Enjoy your weekend! Xoxoxo

LOL - at our house hubby is in charge of filter cleaning. I have never done it. On the bright side for you, you didn't have to pay a repairman to come out and clean them :)

SENCO Cat Herder said...

We don't need air-conditioning here but I did get told the other day about fridge/freezers having filters that need cleaning out and I've never done that in my whole LIFE!! However, I did give myself a pat on the back for cleaning out the filter on the tumble-dryer the other month :)

LOL, yeah, filters are pesky like that. Glad it's all fixed now so you can keep cool while writing!

I love Lee's writing.

I replace my filter once a month. I have it on my calendar so I don't forget. I'll never forget being a young apartment renter and not changing frequently. At least my new one is easy to replace, compared to the last.

Elizabeth Varadan, Author said...

That's very funny about the filters. It's exactly the kind of thing I would never think of. Glad your office air conditioner is working again. Have a great week-end.

Anonymous said...

Ha, ha, that sounds like something I would do if I had an air conditioner. All I have are ceiling and box fans. If it's too hot for them, I go down in my basement. Much cooler down there. Lots of cleaning that needs to be done down there, too. :)

Cathy Kennedy said...

Lexa, don't you just love it when fix is as simple as cleaning off a filter? lol I routinely clean both of our window AC filters to keep them running more efficiently. It's been a hot summer. I'm really looking forward to fall. Have a good weekend!

DA Cairns said...

It's all heaters down under at the moment, but they need cleaning as well. You speaking about air con reminds me of a time in my classroom when the split system was malfunctioning and was producing ice...a couple of little blocks fell on one of my students. The problem? The A/C unit had not been serviced for years.

New Release Books said...

I once saw in the news one whole five storey building full of people got sick because the air con wasn't cleaned and some bacteria got in the system.

Thanks for all the giveaway links.

Diana Wilder said...

Oh, my... I'm off to clean my AC filter. I wonder where it is? (And thank goodness for air conditioners!)

Melancholy and Menace said...

Ha ha! I love the Happy Friday face :D

it never gets hot enough here, to need air conditioning.

Always a good idea to keep thins serviced.

Enjoy your week ♥

Filters?

Thanks for the shout out about Sudden Secrets. It's time I stopped keeping that book a SECRET! :-)

I'm happy that you even have an A/C and get to use it. We've had rain off and on since May!

J.H. Moncrieff said...

I have central air. I wonder if that unit has filters that need to be cleaned too...it's outside. I really have no idea!

You're lucky it was that simple to fix. :)

Unknown said...

I've replaced mine but not cleaned. Hmmm, seems like something I should look into.

L.G. Keltner said...

It's amazing how much a dirty filter can mess things up. I'm glad it was such a simple fix, though!

Annie Neugebauer said...

Oh my gosh! Haha! That's hilarious. I haven't done that one, but I've certainly done similar things. Shouldn't there be a master list of "things all adults should know" that we're sent at some point? I'll never forget how shocked we were when my mother-in-law reminded us to cover our outdoor faucets before the first freeze. How on earth would we have known that otherwise? Live and learn, I guess.
