Please Help Me Name a Character

The male MC in my new novel has no name, poor guy, and he's getting a little annoyed since he's been in two chapters already and has only been referred to as: guy, man, trucker, or cowboy.  Help me pick a name or he'll go on strike!

Bio: He's tall with sandy-colored hair, was born in Texas, and is a 30-year-old army veteran. He now drives a semi (18-wheeler) and is comfortable wearing a cowboy hat, boots and jeans. He's a smart and kind -- but is a loner ever since being injured in an ambush during his army days, and he trusts animals more than people.

Please take the poll (on the side bar)  ============>

Thank you!

I voted (and thought of one of the names on the list before I saw the list). Good luck!

Lexa, I'm from TX and any of these are good (though I did vote). The only name on the list I haven't heard is Harper.

Mmm... I voted. I think he looks like a Wyatt. But what does he say? :-)

I voted for Colton! :D

I voted, but you really need to consider the names of the other characters too. If you have some that are already named, you want to avoid names that are too similar or which begin with the same letter.

Hi Lexa!

I voted for Harper because its about the only one I haven't just recently read about in a book. These are great names but used quite a bit.

When I read his bio I thought he might go by a nickname from the service or even from being a trucker.

He surely is handsome.

Good luck!

Actually, I like the strong name of Luke, but I voted for Colton which is different and also manly...

That was sneaky using that photo as bait. Yowza. :)

Harper makes me think of two things: a video game where the Harpers are this Elvish secret society, and Harper Lee, who is a girl. But Harper could always work as a last name that he goes by. (Logan Harper!)

Logan for the win.

I voted for Ethan, and like LG said, thanks for the male eye candy.

I voted for Luke, but Ethan could also work. Most of the other names don't feel natural to me, but that's probably because I'm not American.
And I understand the dilemma, I am never content when I name my characters and usually prefer to keep them nameless. Though that only works when you write really short stories :)

Wooo, he's cute!

Sounds like a good MC! I hate not having protagonist names and a novel title before I start writing, so I know what you mean! I voted Heath on your poll because that was closest to what he looks and sounds like. I'd like to add Shane, Tucker, Brock, and Davis (cause it sounds just a tad nerdy, definitely unique, and quietly male :D). Good luck picking something!

Colton is too Hollywood. I like Travis, it sounds Texan. I think though that he looks like a Joe.

I voted Colton, but Alex is a great name for people with sandy blond hair.

I picked Logan.

I voted for Luke. Heath makes me think of Heath Ledger, which makes me think of Brokeback Mountain.

I hope your poll results help you decide on a name:)

Nickname = Sarge

I like the name Tucker. That's a good one for a guy like this. But, I voted for Travis since that's close enough. Wyatt is good also.

Travis got my vote, but they're all good.

I went for Harper! But I say lets forget all those names and just call him Yummy! ;)

I voted for Luke - but I think Heath seems quite fitting too : )

I voted! Lots of great choices (I tried coming up with a few before I looked to see if any matched and one did- so I went with that). Good luck!

How about Luke Hardy?

I've voted "Colton". It just jumped out at me after reading your description of the character. :)

So here's my dilemma.
I like the sound of Colton. But Wyatt and Travis are more appropriate and cowboyish. Yet the picture reminds me of a Heath or Logan!
Ha! I'm off to vote now...

So I was stuck staring at that photo for about twenty minutes. I'm kinda dizzy and happy :D I voted!!

Lexa, even before I saw the list of names on the right, I had decided on the name Luke. I was happy to see it in the list.

Before you get too married to a name, take a gander at the Social Security website. Looking at popular names for 1983 (30 years ago), Travis is the ONLY of your choices that's generation-appropriate. Many of these others are popular baby names NOW. If you want us to believe he's 30, not a toddler, I highly recommend picking from names that were popular when he was born.

There are loads of good "cowboy" choices in the top 100 of 1983: Cody, Shane, Cory, Jesse, Dustin, Derek/Derrick. And of course, Travis.

Ohh! He is gorgeous! Yummy!
I voted for Colton, but I like the shortened version of Colt much better. The character sounds absolutely delicious by the way!
Wishing you the best of luck!~

Fun! I voted for Eli, which turns out to be the least popular choice so far. But I read a lot of romance novels, and I feel like I've seen that once less often than all the others. (Romance novels are rife with cowboys, hehe.) They're all good strong names though!

Just voted... seems Ethan is 3rd popular:)

Kelly Hashway said...

I voted for Luke.

Al Diaz said...

Ethan, definitively.

Ava Quinn said...

He seems like an Eli to me! :)

Cute! I voted for Harper although I have no idea why. It just jumped out at me as soon as I saw the list. I'll be curious to see what you end up with, it looked like Colton was way out in front. :)

Greetings human, Lexa,

I shall try again to comment. I see no mention of Rover, or Max, or Buster or Zak. Never mind, I voted for Logan. Must RUN now. My human is searching for a cloning machine....

Pawsitive wishes,

Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar!

Looks very harper-ish, so I voted for Harper ;)

That was so hard! You have some of my favorite males names in the list. I sat here staring at it, trying to decide between Logan, Eli, and Heath. At first I picked Eli, but at the last second I picked Logan -- sounds more cowboy to me. Finding the right name is so hard. Good luck!

I chose Travis. Not hugely keen on most the others. Eli reminds me of a sci-fi movie I watched, Colton puts me in mind of Dallas (the show) for some reason, Wyatt is missing Erp (sp?) and Luke just sounds too young. Plus Travis jumped out at me, thinking of that gorgeous picture. Hubba! Isn't he the guy from Sex and the City (Sam's boyfriend)? If I were you, I'd try a few names out and see which feels right for him. You might find he chooses for you. Good luck. :D

Definitely Luke. Or Ben. But very few truckers wear cowboy boots. Too uncomfortable for long stretches of driving. You don't want to know how I know this. Just trust me.ha

Oh totally Colton. :)
