My husband works in a nearby city and comes home on his days off, Thursday and Sunday. Somehow, all my household items know when he goes and by the time the taillights are out of view, all hell breaks loose.
1) The light switch in the bedroom won't work.
2) The living room ceiling fluorescent just keeps flickering and won't turn on all the way.
3) The water heater keeps over-heating and spits out steam from the faucet, so I have to keep turning it off.
4) The large free-standing fan stopped working.
5) A pipe in the bathroom is leaking.
6) The channel that broadcasts ESPN America disappeared and it's only a month and a half until NFL starts! Nooooo!
On the good side:
1) My laptop is fine, the internet is working, so I'm still online with all my virtual buddies!
This post is part of VikLit's blog hop, Celebrate the Small Things. Gah! How annoying is that? It's like they know when the person who can fix them leaves the room. My partner has our house so networked and computer dependent, when he goes away, I can't even make the TV work. My kids think I'm a total idiot.
This is tragic (but I admit, I may have sniggered - sorry!) Hope he can fix them before they drive you insane. My hubs is often away for up to five days and I just save stuff for him, although I could do it myself. It feels wrong. I do my stuff, he does his. It gives him purpose :P X

Yikes! I hate it when everything goes wrong at once like that. But you're right, at least you still have your laptop!
In other words, his mere presence scares everything into working correctly?
He'll be back in less than two days. Don't burn yourself on the water. And if nothing else, get ESPN back soon!
Living in a house on my own for 4 years has taught me a few things about fixing things on my own. You might already know all of this, but here are my tips:
1. Unless you have already done this: check light bulbs, fuses and electrical conduits that are on the same group as your bedroom light.
2. That means the lamp is broken and about to stop working - exchange it.
3. If you take down the cover to the water heater (and preferably can find the manual) there should be a small dial that you can adjust degrees on somewhere.
4. Look for glitches/ breaks anywhere on the cord and where it is attached to device and to plug. Though, this is probably nothing you can do on your own.
5. Is it a plastic pipe with detachable parts? Turn off the water and take it apart, clean all parts and put it back together. Is it metal? Call a plumber.
6. Hmm... Call the cable company?
Yikes! That's a lot to go wrong when he's gone. Too bad you can't make a request for an emergency visit home when that happens.
Oh man... well that is your house being a traitor to you is what that is lol. Hope it all gets fixed soon, in the meantime enjoy the laptop and the Internet... and the weekend ;)
I'll trade all of that (except the water heater thing, lol) for my skunk problem! Deal?
Glad you still have the internet; that is the one thing I cannot live without these days :)
Where are they when you need them? Sometimes it is nice to have a man around the house. However, I bet you fixed all ( or most of them) by yourself. I really think that women cope better than men when faced with the daily crisis of the day - at least that is true in my house.
Wow, all hell's breaks loose is right! It always seems to happen all at once. I'm glad your internet is working and I hope you have a better weekend.
Murphy's Law strikes again! But that's great the internet is still working! :D
Sometimes I do a post called Happies and Crappies, it sounds like it was that kind of week for you. Thank goodness it's over. I hope...
Happy Friday!

. . .and your microwave hasn't imploded again!
Oh my goodness, you can't get a break! But I'm glad your internet is still working. And I'm glad to meet another NFL fan - I love football and can't wait for the fall. :)
It must be rough having your husband home only two days a week. You must keep him busy on those two days.
LOL. Since you still have internet, maybe you can Google how to fix a leaky pipe and wonky fluorescent light. :P
Poor hubby. He's got a long to -do list when he gets home. :)
I've had a rotten week too. On a positive note, it's almost over.
Sorry you're having domestic difficulties. It's almost Sunday though, so he'll be back soon! :)
Yay for the internet and working laptops. Hope your ESPN America channel returns soon!
Happy Weekend :)
Sounds like my week. Hubby went away and immediately the front and back doors are both sticking badly, a window is refusing to close and my living room door has fallen off one hinge (holding on tentatively with the other). I am a DIY novice, so I have no idea what to do with any of things... apart from phone my dad :-)
Things know just when to malfunction at my house, too. Good luck getting it all taken care of!
That's what people say about me. "Oh, it works when you're here" or "You know how to fix this" or "You have better luck with this than me." I agree with L.G., you can always Google the solutions.
As the saying goes: It never rains, but it pours... your situation is a perfect example.
But look at the positive, at least you still have your laptop and Internet...
Writer In Transit
Maybe the next time he leaves you could talk real loud about how he's just going to the grocery store and will be right back... It's worth a try, lol!
I hope the two of you get a few of the things fixed Sunday.
Hey Lexa,
Yes, finally, time for another award winning, or non-award winning comment from me.
The really good this is indeed your laptop is working and that way, you get to read my comment! :)
Dare I say this? Football is already on! You can find the much more exciting version, The Canadian Football League, on various feeds!
A peaceful, hopeful weekend to you.
Gary :)
Gosh, so many things not working, must be irritating. Hope things get back to normal working conditions soon.
Well, at least you have the most important thing of all, the Internet! Hahahaha. I hope the revolution of the appliances ends soon, at least on time for you to watch NFL games.
My best and plenty of dragon hugs!
So long as internet works..:D Hope your weekend is going great though, despite the household items misbehaving. Sometimes I think they have a mind of their own. I'm imagining this hushed conversation: "There goes the tail lights!" The TV
"Yeah, lets just make sure he isn't coming back." The Microwave
"Oh, he's gone for sure. He had his overnight bag," says the living room overhead lights, blinking on and off.
"Oh yay! Time to torture the living daylights out of the lady of the house. Hey yo, TV, want to take the lead today? I had my turn last week. " asks the Radio.
Well, that's I imagine the conversation between my household items. :D
PS: I've nominated you for the Liebster Award over on my blog, Lexa. :)

PS
The household items seem to have an agent of their own.... but you have internet, and that I couldn't live without.
I suspect your hubs put a spell on the house so that you would know what a mess life is without him :))
Aaahh! Lol. May your hubby be able to be superman on his return and get everything in good order. ;) Enjoy your weekend! Writer’s Mark
Least the internet is behaving! Hope hubby is in a fix-it mood when he returns. Enjoy the weekend.
As long as the internet is working!
I agree with Viklit, as long as the internet is working! I hope you're having a lovely weekend. :)
Ghosts in the machine, eh? I've had things like that happen!
You could attempt to intimidate them into working again. Start saying things out loud like, "Hubby's boss is sending him home early from work. He will be here in a few hours." See if that doesn't turn things around. Sometimes you have to employ your own sneaky techniques.
That's horrible! I'm so bad at fixing things around the house. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have someone around to fix those things for me. But at least your laptop and the internet is working! If my computer died one me, I don't know what I'd do...
Hope your week improves and all your appliances magically fix themselves :)
and then of course, all the broken things mysteriously start working properly when he walks back in the door! I know the feeling well :)
......dhole
Bloody hell! Sounds like you and your husband need a new apartment. This one's probably haunted ;-)
But, actually, who cares about such 'trifles' when you have internet? :D
Haha that's really crappy. It all seems to know when you are all by your lonesome.
To be honest, as long as my laptop and internet worked I would be okay with all of those random mishaps ;-)

LOL Really, things have to either all work fine, or all break at the exact same time. Usually when you are running low on the budget and suffering like a dog from the strongest strand of the common cold since the H1N1 outbreak. Gee... Just hang on in there and trust that everything will be better soon enough. Hope you have better days ahead!
Things always seem to break when the "fixer" isn't around. ;) Glad the computer and internet are still working. Hope the other things fix themselves or that your husband can fix them the next time he is home.
I'd be sitting in the dark without my handy Husband Unit, too. Hope it all gets fixed soon, Lexa.
