About three weeks ago, my microwave died. True, it was over fifteen years old, but it didn't die a "natural death." It was murdered by an electric surge. *sniffle* Luckily, my other appliances survived -- the micro was the only casualty.
You never realize how much you use something until it's gone.
I never realized how my lazy-butt-self always makes big recipes that last for 3-4 days. And my freezer is filled with danishes my hubby gets free from work. And when my coffee goes cold -- it's a major problem!
I tried to use the stove to reheat things. The pasta broke into little pieces. The rice just burned to the bottom of the pan. I found that my oven has a grill thingy in the top of it -- but I also found that if you put danishes on a cookie sheet under that grilling thingy and forget about them, THEY CATCH ON FIRE!!
OK, Domestic Goddess I am not. In fact, when it comes to the kitchen, I'm more like Dennis the Menace.
But at long last, my sweet, wonderful micro is fixed, back home, and on its countertop!
** Huge sigh of relief! **

Ha, first world problems. =) I never had a microwave, I can't cook and I'm pretty lazy, so if my stove would break, I'd probably start to eat only cold things :D

I love that witchy cartoon! My washing machine broke down a couple of weeks ago. It was only 2 years old and cost $300 to repair. I was NOT happy! You don't realize how much these appliances mean to you until you don't have them. I don't think I've ever enjoyed doing the laundry as much as the day I finally got my washing machine working again.
Yes, our oven in our second home broke down and fizzled out oven-wise on Christmas Day. Luckily we had an in-law suite and another stove, so dinner didn't suffer. I determined it was a rogue case of Murphy's Law (what can happen, will happen).
Now, I know how to spell 'toldja', too.
I'm glad to hear your microwave is back! My grandma always told me that you had to unplug toasters or else they could randomly start to smoke and combust. Of course, I never believed her. I love my grandma and she was awesome, awesome lady. And yet, one time, the toaster totally started to smoke and I wasn't even using it! It didn't really break, but that was the first thing I thought of. I think my brother is to blame for it, but he swears he did't do anything.
Hurray for having a functioning microwave again! Ours broke down when I was just a kid, and we never got it replaced, so if I ever had the opportunity to use one again...I'd likely be scratching my head in confusion, haha. (Same thing with dishwashers, since that broke down yeeeeaaars ago, too!)
We haven't had a microwave for about 8 years and I don't really miss it.
I remember our television broke one Christmas and it was the only one in the house. My husband couldn't cope with it and had to buy a little one. I was quite happy to do without but he couldn't.
Now the television is fixed we have two, which means I can watch what I like when he's watching the football!
My washing machine chose the week that my son had a vomiting bug to break down. After he'd puked all over both sets of his own sheets, and the only set we have for our bed, we had to take the stinky bedding to my partner's parents' house to wash while we went to buy a new washing machine.
Not my favorite few days....
Glad you got your microwave fixed! They're not my favorite appliance, but they're so handy when you want to re-heat stuff!
I don't have a microwave, my kitchen isn't big enough for one. In our house cold coffee gets thrown away and another one made, I've gotten used to mushed up reheated pasta, and you have to keep stirring the rice! I've never set anything on fire though :-)
I remember the dryer going out and damp clothes hung all over the house to dry. Fun.
Glad you got your microwave back. You're right, it's something most people use all the time and don't realize it.
Oh, no, on fire danishes! Lol! I've had my trials with the broiler in our oven, too...
We rely on our modern gadgets don't we? So glad you are now back in working order and normal service can be resumed! Is that the ping of the microwave I hear?!

Hilarious! I was musing over our constant use of the microwave the other day actually. But how, when it was first introduced, we were all wondering what the point was...
My computer has no battery, and living in the countryside we suffer power outages now and again. When my computer dies, and the whole house goes pitch black, that's when I miss ALL modern electrical appliances at once.
I remember my old computer's cable wire short-circuting. Caused me enough grief.

*Wipes tears from eyes* Nothing worse than a dead microwave! I know from suffering that same loss. May you adopt another soon and recover from that horrid power surge event.
No broken or dead appliances for a while, though, once one goes it seems like more sputter and die. You're right, I can't believe how much we depend on our appliances, can you imagine our great-grandmothers living in a world without all our gadgets?

believe it or not, sweet sister, I've never ever had a microwave oven :) Unlike most people in the West, here in my part of the woods we usually cook and bake everything from the scratch. I don't think I've ever defrosted something or just warmed up a ready made meal :)

A smoke detector recently went off in our house. It was hard wired so removing the battery didn't help. It was so annoying I almost forgot to put out the fire. Just kidding.
My family moved a while back, and we didn't have a microwave for a few days because a new one was supposed to be installed in our new house and there was a delay or whatever, but we were microwave-less for a while. One of the kids my mom used to babysit for exclaimed in horror "But how are you going to cook?"
I get slightly hysterical when my computer is on the fritz. I need my internet!

I've been pretty lucky with our appliances. (knock on wood) Years ago, when getting ready to go to a party, my darned hair dryer decided to go belly up. There I was with a full head of long wet hair and no darned dryer. But I survived. So, I didn't look exactly "chic" at that party, but hey! a bun isn't just for up-tight librarians, right?
So glad your microwave is back up and running. It can be so hard when something we depend on dies! I have had my hair dryer die (in the winter, getting ready for work) and my air conditioner has stopped working in the middle of a hot week. I guess I should appreciate all of my appliances more. :)
I've had a lot of things go belly up. The worst was the furnace in January with highs in the single digits.
Good thing you microwave is back... not sure I could do without a hot cuppa. No appliances broke on me, but we did lose hot water for a week once, and OMG, I almost died. Freezing showers are never fun, not even in summer.
The internet. It's been coming and going lately. And it's driving me up the wall.

My microwave is over 10 years old... talk about longevity! I'm hanging on to it for dear life because they don't make appliances like they used to. My sister bought a new fridge 2 years ago, and it's already giving her major problems.

When my last microwave broke about two years ago, I didn't wait. I grabbed my keys and went to the store to buy a new one. This was before a trip when I was busy packing. I lost sleep going to the store that day and I could've shopped when I came back, but I just can't live without a microwave. I also have a spare now, which was given to me.
I think I'm sending out wrong vibes to machines. Whenever I buy or receive something new (DVD player, TV, computer), it dies almost immediately. It doesn't matter if it's expensive or cheap. Sometimes it breaks within 24 hours, sometimes after a few months. Never more than that :-(
When my satellite TV goes out...OMG! It's like, who are all these people in this house? Do I live with them? :)
I would be just as helpless and frustrated if the microwave broke. Love the cartoon, though, and I'm glad it's back in working order.

I actually have a spare microwave still packed in it's box under my desk!
I'm so glad you have your microwave back. They're indispensable. My major problem is putting a pan of sugar water on the burner to boil for the hummingbirds, going to do something else, and forgetting about the water until the house is suddenly filled with smoke and the pan is filled with black sugar that is impossible to clean. I throw away a lot of pans.

Glad you have you microwave back. I use mine for rice and heating up my hot drinks I've left go cold - several times before they're consumed normally :)

Ah, the wonders of the microwave oven! Glad you didn't burn down the entire kitchen while you waited for the microwave to be fixed.
I don't think I could live without my microwave. My sister doesn't have one, and I don't know how she does it.
Lately, it seems like everything is breaking. :( I would hate not having a microwave. My husband doesn't really care, though. Except for that warming up coffee thing.
I went without our microwave for a couple weeks once. I was amazed how often I missed it. It really has become a necessity in our house.

This totally just cracked me up! My mom must have lit more oven fires while I was growing up than anyone I've ever heard up. It's made me paranoid about it! My power went down the other afternoon and that always reminds me how lucky we are to live in a world with electricity--I'm pretty sure I would have died without it!

I would of replied earlier. Sadly, I was twiddling the knob. Sadly, I was twiddling the knob for the timer on my microwave and it's not working anymore. I spin the knob and it keeps going back to "30" seconds.
With fiery hilarity, you have described just how much you missed your microwave. Very funny, in a bizarre sort of way.
Enjoy your fixed microwave. Is it a widescreen microwave? I once thought a microwave was a TV :)

LOL, Lexa! I haven't used a microwave in almost ten years. To re-heat stuff I either stick it in my steamer or in a bain-marie. (:
Ha! That is no good. I'm actually surprised a good handful of people don't have microwaves >.< I find that crazy. It may seem silly, and it's not yet happened, but if my microwave went out I would be pretty frantic. I use it way too much, and like you, things seem to become destroyed when using the oven. I am not sure I'd pay to get it repaired, though, over buying a new one. Depends on the price diff.
For me, the one thing that would make me go on high panic mode (and has) is if my laptop were to go out. It's pretty much my only connection to the "outside" world. I don't have a smartphone on any kind of plan, a backup computer, etc. I almost lost my laptop just weeks after buying it in a mad bout of life or death with a June Bug that happened to find its way into my apartment. It was intense... and very emotional lol
