Unwelcome Houseguest

A few days ago, I spotted a gecko (called a bors by Egyptians) in my apartment. This isn't an unusual occurrence, but the ones who normally slip through cracks under doors or loose screens are teeny-tiny. They're cute little guys who run up the walls, perch on the tops of my drapery rods and survey their new home.

The lizards eat bugs and insects, like mosquitoes, so I've adopted a live-and-let-live policy -- or rather a If-you-kill-mosquitoes-you're-welcome-to-stay attitude.

But the new gecko is much bigger than the ones before. He's about eight inches long as opposed to the normal four-inch ones. To be honest, he's kinda creeping me out.
It makes me wonder if those little tiny geckos can go from this:

Say it ain't so!

Yeah, that would totally creep me out. Maybe he will eat lots of begs?

I love lizards! I've always wanted an iguana. :) When I went to St. Thomas, we had a lizard in our room on the nightstand. He was adorable. I just moved him outside. I'm okay with lizards because they have legs. Snakes, ick!

Oh you don't want that big one running through your apartment. I would freak. My cat is always dragging tiny lizards into the house, and I hate it. I will always remember the time the cat was chasing a lizard down the stairs at the same time my husband came round the corner to go up the stairs. Yep - he squealed like a girl...hehe.

awww... they're cute! besides, the bigger he grows, the more mosquitoes he can eat, right?

I found the little ones pretty cute, though the big one - not so much. Still, I think I'd get a bit wigged out to just have them appear, out of the blue, like that. Maybe I'd get used to it...But maybe not. :-)

How weird that you chose today to post about lizards! My friend and I were just talking about them yesterday. We both lived in Samoa when we were kids and had 'pet' lizards. Mine used to sleep on my tummy when the temperature dropped. I got totally grossed out when it dropped its tail in the bed one night.... His name was George. The weird thing is, my friend's was called George too.

Ooh, not sure I could live happily alongside them, whatever size they are!

AT least they bring some advantage :P

Yeah...once they get that big, I think I'd be a little creeped out...mostly because I would wonder if this was a newer, bigger type of gecko--and if so, if the big one I saw was actually on the large side for its type or on the small side of the new-gecko scale :)

Anything that eats bugs is my friend. :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I'm a new follower now. :)

I'm with you. I'm cool with spiders and lizards as long as they are on the small side (as Ciara said, if they eat other bugs, we're cool). When they hit 'I ate nuclear waste for breakfast' size, then I get a little freaked out.

I had a cute salamander once who grew to huge, scary proportions and never turned into a frog. It freaked me out, and I flushed it down the toilet! I was about nine at the time.

Does he have an accent...like on the commercials?? :)

Oh my... sadly I didn't adopt a live and let live policy when I found a whip scorpion in the house. But I'm glad you are getting along so far... much braver than me around anything cold blooded!

Geckos are pretty cute, so I would definitely let on live...maybe not leave, though. ;) But it would be a bit scary to see one much larger than usual.

I hope your houseguest decides not to stay too long. You are much braver than I am! Julie

I used to catch and release the geckos at our house in Houston, but they were hard to see because they matched the wall paint exactly. But yeah...a big one...I'd let my husband handle that one.

I feel bad for the lizards who sneak into my home. If my cats catch them, they torture them. I try to capture them in a jar for release or nudge them outside with a broom.

My boss and her husband have geckos as pets. They live in an old Tube TV. I thought it was pretty cool until they (my boss and her husband not the geckos) started growing mealworms in their closet. Growing worms for my pet seemed to draw a line I wasn't willing to cross.

When I lived in Laos we we're Hotel Gecko Central. I never put on my shoes without shaking them first. I never slept with my head from under the sheets. Contrary to common belief, geckos do lose their suction cup footing. Of course, closing a car door with a bang is out because if you do it rains geckos down your blouse. They are cute and they are helpful with the insects. The big guys are fearsome when you run into them. I tried not to do that!

I think Geckos are cute, outside!

I've awarded you. Stop by when you have a chance. :))

Awww, so cute! I like lizards. My kids had salamanders in a tank at some point. So interesting to watch them walk around with their little feet!

I had a pet lizard once. But I'm not sure I'd want a huge one roaming my house.

We don't have Geckos, but do have liards. I like them because they eat insects. I haven't seen any this year. The Mississippi Kite's usually eat them. Haven't seen any kites either. Too hot and dry I suppose.

My wife found a big wall gecko in the bathroom, hurried to me just to realise she is braver than i. I can't go into that bathroom. I think i should call my neighbours for help. I need advice. People in my neighbourhood take me for a courageous person. Will this be a blow...
