Happy Halloween!

I know I'm a little early with my Halloween wishes, but I love holidays so much (especially Halloween!) that I always wish they lasted more than just one day.  I mean, if people spend so much time anticipating something, isn't it too bad that after 24-hours it's over?

What about birthdays?  Getting birthday wishes is so delightful -- it makes you smile, makes you feel special -- so don't you wish it went on a bit longer than one day? How about a birthweek?  That would give your friends, family, and co-workers a whole week to find time to give you cards, send texts and e-cards, buy gifts and celebrate with you!

Can you imagine a Christmas week?  Okay, we kinda get a week vacay between Christmas and New Year, but what about the day itself?  You know how excited you were as a kid to wake up Christmas morning and see loads of presents under the tree?  But after a few hours (or minutes!) all that's left are torn wrappings and empty boxes.  And you keep looking under the tree or feeling inside the stocking, wishing for the thrill of another few gifts to open.  Well, I think that should be spread out over a few days at least.

Plus, work vacations.  Shouldn't we get 4-5 days for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, etc.?  These would be paid vacations of course!

I think we need more time to celebrate holidays and birthdays.  Who's with me?

I love Halloween so a week of Halloween fun would be awesome!

Thanks to Hurricane Sandy, we won't be having Halloween this year. We're supposed to get hit pretty bad. :(

I totally agree.

We're supposed to get bad weather on Halloween too, but we'll still find a way to make it fun. We celebrate birthweeks at my house and half-birthdays. :)

Great idea, but a week of holidays makes my bank account weep.

I always try to make May my birthday month... Unfortunately other people don't seem to like that idea. Especially my kids!

Due to changing jobs and my shift patterns, this year is the first year I'll ever have to work on Christmas Eve, and I'll be back on 27th :-( So, yes, I whole-heartedly support your idea!

I'd take a week of Christmas! And at my house, we do try to milk the birthday week for all it's worth.

I love your idea. Especially Christmas. Oh the anticipation I felt as a kid and then, it was over in an hour. What a let down! Better to have presents all week long, same amount, but doled out so that each day would be exciting. Plus, then kids would enjoy the presents they got a bit before opening another to distract. Hmm, maybe they should put us in charge :)

My wife takes the entire month to celebrate her birthday. I like your idea but I don't think my wallet could handle it.

Ahoy! A kindred spirit! I love celebrating holidays too! So far my birthday lasts about a month - starts on September 15 and lasts until October 15 with my actual birth date landing in the middle on September 29th. Christmas for me starts as soon as Summer departs - which meant that I was seeing Christmas lights in my minds eye about the beginning of October. Between now and Christmas I also still love celebrating Halloween (though I'm desperately unprepared with either activities or decorations) - and I started planning Thanksgiving dinner about a week ago. Hurray for the holiday seasons!

My sister celebrates her kids' birthday for a week. In fact, everyone in their house gets their birthday week. I think it's a nice idea!

I've taken to celebrating birthday weeks nowadays, not just one day. So why not a Halloween week too? :)

I'm with you! Guess I can thank Frankenstorm for getting some fun Halloween time with my kids, school is cancelled the next two days. I see making treats (let's hope not by candlelight) in my future. Fun post!

I do like Halloween and the candy that goes with it (Easter, too), so having a week of candy-filled Halloween days is fine by me! It'd be bad for my waist-line and my teeth, but I'd be happy pigging out on sweets for a week. Total bliss!

That sounds like the smartest plan ever Lexa :). We do take Christmas very seriously, but my boyfriend can't get more than a day off :).

LOVE this concept~ especially a week for Christmas~ special activities to look forward to each day, etc. Trim the tree (though we try to get the tree up at the very beginning of December for maximum enjoyment), bake the cookies, wrap the gifts, caroling day, I could go on and on...

Oh, and one of my friends annually declares that September is her "birth month" so she gives herself little treats throughout the 4-week period :)

Oh, I'm with you on this one. Would be great to have like two weeks of Christmas, everything twinkling and people being extra-friendly. :)

A week of birthday fun would be so awesome. But who picks up the tab at the end of it all?

Hi Lexa: Great article! I'd love to hear how you celebrate Halloween in Egypt. I was in Paris one Halloween and was surprised to see that they don't celebrate it at all.

A week of Halloween might send me into sugar overload.

Oh God no. I work for an evil corporation that makes me work every single holiday. 5 days of Christmas? Are you trying to kill me?? Because of my job, I hate all holidays. Bah hum bug!

I am with you! I would love the holidays to be extended a little longer. I do celebrate birthdays for a week. I always think that one day is not enough. I don't just celebrate my birthday for a week- but also my friends' and family's birthdays. Then people can feel special for a little longer. :)

thanksgiving gets a week, but eating extra for a week isnt healthy! thats why jan & new year's reminds us to exercise & diet!
same cycle every year! and i love it! (except the getting older part...)

Heh, in my family we have birthday fortnights! Sometimes the celebrations go for even longer! We sure know how to milk it. :) But I am totally with you that Halloween should be a national holiday. Who can work hopped up on sugar anyway?

I found your blog through Cathy Keaton's site. :)

Happy Halloween!

I agree with celebrating things more often.

I'm with ya, although Halloween is my least favorite. I think we should take a month for Christmas though and maybe 2 weeks for Thanksgiving????

My teen and tween daughters had a Halloween party on Saturday, squeaking it in before the hurricane (phew). They had loads of fun decorating the house, and their guests came in costume before changing into their bathing suits to take a dip in the hot tub. And because they were all nuts, they jumped in the swimming pool for good measure! Lots of shrieking -- because it was COLD -- and then swimming back to the hot tub as fast as they could.

I'm glad they had fun! It was kind of neat to be the house with the cool party.

I go in the opposite direction. I'm not big on celebrating holidays, especially Christmas (I want to rename Christmas to 'Voluntary-spend-yourself-into-bankruptcy-on-gifts-for-relatives-you-see-once-a-year-who-don't-even-like-the-junk-you-got-them Day', but I was told the name was too long).

Plus the Christmas music. No thank you.

I guess my deal is that I feel like every day is special. We should treasure each moment instead of spending a month and a half anticipating one day, then three months paying for everything we did that one day. I'd rather relax with a cup of coffee and a jazz record. Yeah, that's the stuff.

I'm all for extended paid vacations! I do wish Halloween was longer ... or at least more on the weekends. It's always disappointing when Halloween (October 31st) is during the week. It's just not as much fun as a Friday or Saturday.

Hahaha I agree with you all of the holidays or birthdays should be extended to like 2 weeks! LOL! :D

I'm so there... I'd love a week off for my birthday... that would be very awesome:)

I'm up for birthweek. I need a few days to celebrate and few to recover, so a week would be just about perfect. Let's get the ball rolling on that one!

I'd have enjoyed a few more days of Halloween this year, given that my neighborhood was pretty boring and no trick or treaters came to the house. :-(

Lexa for president! Lexa for president! I'd vote for you, no doubt! Belated Happy Halloween for you, too. With the hurricane and the destruction left behind, this year I didn't enjoy the season as much. Let's hope next year they'll give us an extra day to celebrate ;)

I love Halloween too! I have a friend who insists we celebrate her entire birth MONTH, and she's not even being ironic. :-)

I love Halloween but I can't do any more holidays - I think it's b/c of the 4 kids and all the pressure to be magical, buy gifts, bring in treats for parties!

That is why we start decorating for Xmas on Thanksgiving night and make the entire month festive. that's really my fave part anyway, not the actual day of Xmas, but the whole build up to it. Of course, that was not true as a child, but now I get to watch my own kids watch every day leading up to it drag. lol. so much fun!!
