Celebrate: Eternal Optimist & Giveaways

Sometimes when I'm writing, I'm in the ZONE! The chapters are well outlined, I come up with ideas to make them even better, words flow, and my novel is zooming off my keyboard!

I become so optimistic! I'm sure that my terrific progress will continue on forever. I start fantasizing about getting my book done in 3 months --
and it will be AWESOME!

Then things start to happen. BAD things.

Some are just inescapable.

Some are pure laziness
or bad news that gets me down.

I return to work eventually,
but my SUPER productive streak has vanished,
and I've become Pokey-the-turtle.

Sometimes, a break is in order,
and I feel RECHARGED when I come back!

Then . . .
I become so optimistic! I'm sure that my terrific progress will continue on forever. I start fantasizing about getting my book done in 3 months --
and it will be AWESOME . . .

The strange life-cycle of the Eternal Optimist.

How about you? Would you consider yourself an optimist? A pessimist? Or a realist?

I'm definitely an optimist. Like at the moment, I've been plotting this story idea for a couple of weeks now, and it's going so well, I've been getting tonnes of notes down every day. I refuse to accept the fact that this won't continue.
Have a great weekend!

I'm a hopeless pessimist, LOL. No eternal optimism for me... XD

More in the middle, leaning a bit toward optimism.

Natalie Aguirre said...

I'm like Alex. I try to stay optimistic but I've had a lot of life changes and sometimes that's hard.

JeffO said...

I have the same cycles with my writing. Fun, huh?

AS for my overall outlook on life? I strangely find myself being more and more optimistic, though it's tempered with a healthy dose of pessimism (yes, it's possible!). Have a nice weekend!

LOL!!! I thought of myself as an optimist. But the older I get I seemed to move toward the middle line. Somewhere in-between...if that makes any sense...

LOL - that's the perfect description of my writing cycle :-)

Recharging ourselves is the hardest thing. Getting my juice back lately has not been easy.

I've been accused of being too optimistic before. I'm the person that if the car ahead goes slow and he makes it through the light but we don't, I'm excited that we are the first in line.

Birgit said...

I think the process you go through is normal for most of us. I have experienced the same pattern. As for what I am...I consider myself an optimistic realist:)

I love the cycle. Right now, I'm not in that cycle, but hopefully soon.

It's been a long time since I've felt the joy of being in the writing groove. It's always next week, or maybe the next. I miss it.

Andrew Leon said...

The problem with being a realist is that everyone else decides you're a pessimist.

stephen Hayes said...

I think I fall somewhere between optimist and realist.

Elizabeth Varadan, Author said...

I'm basically an optimist, although I do have my cycles of self-doubt. The thing is, I get lazy and start smelling the flowers instead of describing them. 😊

Kate Larkindale said...

I've always been fairly optimistic, but I feel like the last few years have really ground me down and I'm not nearly as optimistic as I used to be. I kind of hate it, but life just hasn't given me enough roses for me to believe in them anymore.

Rhonda Albom said...

I generally thnk of myself as an optimist, but having recently given up on my creative non-fiction, I might have to change that.

The Law of Undulation. It happens to all of us, in all areas of our lives. C.S. Lewis wrote about it in The Screwtape Letters, and it explains a lot.

Hope you are having a fabulous weekend!

Beverly Stowe McClure said...

I'm an optimist/realist. I'm optimistic when I start something, then realistic when I realize it will take longer to do than I thought.

Sue Bursztynski said...

An optimist. I have a novel frozen at 60,000 words, but I know I will finish it ... Eventually.

Deanie Humphrys-Dunne said...

I'm like you Lexa, always an optimist. Once in a while I get depressed and bogged down, but it doesn't' last long. Aren't we lucky that part doesn't last? Have a great week and keep up the good work.

Tonja Drecker said...

I'm an optimist. Sometimes forced, but I'm determined to stay there. Just wish the turtle writing speed would feel the same way.

Cathy Kennedy said...

Lexa, I'm an optimist for sure. I always look for the good but I'm also a realist. I know there are limits to everything. Life gets in the way for us all causing us to throw the breaks on to tend to whatever comes up and that can be upsetting in many ways. Best of luck to you to get back in the zone!

Mark Murata said...

All I can say is, sometimes parts of a story seem to write themselves.

Jenny Baranick said...

I want to be a pessimist because lounging on a plush bed eating a box full of chocolates looks amazing.

Sharon Himsl said...

Yay for optimism!! Got to stick with it. The alternative just doesn't work!

L.G. Keltner said...

I can relate to this so much. I've been in pokey the turtle mode today, but I'm hoping that changes soon. I made some good progress last week, so there's that, at least.

Erika Beebe said...

I love this blog hop idea and plan to sign up when I get past this week. I am definitely an optimist. Sometimes too much of one. I guess it's how I cope with all the darker sides of life. Sunshine chases shadows away. I wish you luck! I bet if anyone can make it happen, you can.

cleemckenzie said...

There is familiarity in this cycle of which you speak. I do believe I've encountered it upon occasion. Thanks for the great list of freebies. It just keeps getting longer, doesn't it?

Unknown said...

I know that cycle so well!! Not surprisingly, I didn't write much for a month or two after November. But now I'm in it to win it!

Joylene Nowell Butler said...

Your journey will be AWESOME! Rock on, girlfriend!

J.H. Moncrieff said...

Normally, I hate gifs, but those ones were really cute. They made me smile.

I consider myself an optimist, but sometimes chronic worrying can push me into pessimism. Of course, if anyone calls me on it, I'll claim to be a realist. :)

But for the most part, I'm optimistic. Ya have to be, right?

Ruth Schiffmann said...

Hah! I love this post, Lexa! Sounds just like my process. Of course there are many more of the slow and plodding days than there are of the super productive ones, but I can't help but thinking, once I've had one, that I can replicate it. I guess that makes me an optimist!

Annie Neugebauer said...

Oh, this is too real. Flip it for me, though. I'm certain I'll never get this project done, until I get a burst of progress...

GlenR said...

I'm a realist but unfortunately it's sometimes misinterpreted as pessimism. (Love your animations). 👵🏻

LD Masterson said...

Thanks for mentioning the giveaway of Still Me After All These Years.

I have a little sign posted on the wall of my office that reads: The pessimist may be proved right in the long run, but the optimist has a better time on the trip.

H.R. Bennett said...

I feel for you. My major stoppage wasn't initial production, it was rewrites and editing...

That process may consume my soul.

I'm a pessimist who wishes she could be an optimist.

I have to learn the art of eternal optimism :)

I have recently discovered that a lot of successful people are optimistic. While I was working on my graphic novel, I was listening to a lot of podcasts on optimism. It really helps to be optimistic. Even if you imagine yourself successful or in a better world, you're at the very least happy for those minutes in your life. Whether it comes true or not, you've given yourself a few minutes of happiness.

DMS said...

I can totally relate to this! I tend to be optimistic and love when I get on a roll and start fantasizing about all the good things that are happening and will start happening. :) Awesome GIFs to go with the cycle!
